TOPIC OUTLINE

Musculoskeletal, or MSK, conditions are one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, affecting about one third of people in developed countries. Common conditions include low back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. Many people with MSK conditions also live with other health issues such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and mental health problems. These conditions are often linked to chronic inflammation and require long term management. Research shows that sleep plays an important role in regulating inflammation and supporting tissue repair. Poor or insufficient sleep can increase inflammatory markers and pain sensitivity. In this presentation I will focus on how adequate high-quality sleep can help reduce inflammation and support musculoskeletal health.

Key Learning Outcomes

  1. Explain the relationship between chronic inflammation and MSK conditions.
  2. Describe the role of sleep, in regulating inflammation and supporting overall health.
  3. Recognise the importance of lifestyle factors, particularly adequate sleep in long-term management of MSK conditions and inflammation.
