Exercise as Medicine

Outline
This session will commence with a 20-minute introduction to the field of Lifestyle Medicine, structured around its six foundational pillars: nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress management, social connections, and substance use management. The subsequent section will focus on the concept of “Exercise as Medicine,” beginning with an examination of the relationship between physical inactivity and systemic inflammation. Building on this foundation, the discussion will emphasize the therapeutic potential of physical activity in mitigating inflammation and enhancing clinical outcomes for patients with musculoskeletal conditions, including low back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Define the six pillars of Lifestyle Medicine and their relevance to health promotion and disease prevention.
  2. Explain the link between physical inactivity and systemic inflammation.
  3. Describe how physical activity can reduce inflammation and improve outcomes in musculoskeletal conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis.
  4. Apply Lifestyle Medicine principles, particularly exercise, in clinical practice to support patient management and long-term health.
