Musculoskeletal issues and nutritional approaches to reduce inflammation

Musculoskeletal (MSK) problems are the leading causes of disability, affecting approximately a third of the population in developed countries. The most common MSK conditions are low back pain, neck pain, osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoporosis, and fractures related to osteoporosis. Many people diagnosed with MSK problems are also living with comorbidities such as mental and behavioural issues, diabetes, obesity, heart, stroke and vascular disease, to name a few. Due to the nature of MSK problems (i.e. chronic underlying inflammation), these conditions and their comorbidities require multidisciplinary long-term management and care. Substantial evidence supports recommending the Mediterranean diet for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, Type 2 Diabetes and depression, including MSK problems, due to its anti-inflammatory effects. Collectively, lifestyle recommendations (i.e. improved nutrition, exercise, sleep and social connections, as well as stress and substance abuse management), have a role to play in reducing inflammation and managing MSK problems. However, this presentation will focus on the positive impact the Mediterranean diet can have on MSK problems such as osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis.
Today’s presentation will be focusing on musculoskeletal conditions through the lens of lifestyle medicine, focusing on the Mediterranean diet’s role in inflammation, bone health, gut microbiota, and wellbeing.
